The death of WWE superstar Bray Wyatt, whose actual name was Windham Rotunda, at the age of 36, was disclosed on social media on Thursday by Paul “Triple H” Levesque, the company’s chief content officer. As one of the most original writers in professional wrestling, Rotunda has established a reputation for constantly pushing the envelope with his unique characters and narrative techniques.

Wyatt had been missing from WWE television for a while due to unreported health problems. Fans were surprised by his sudden departure from WWE in 2021, but he triumphantly returned in September of the following year, accompanied by cryptic vignettes that captivated viewers’ attention and increased television ratings.

“Just received a call from WWE Hall of Famer Mike Rotunda who informed us of the tragic news that our WWE family member for life, Windham Rotunda—also known as Bray Wyatt—passed unexpectedly earlier today,” Levesque said in a statement expressing his sympathies. His family is in our thoughts and we ask that everyone respects their need for privacy right now.

With his father, Mike Rotunda, becoming famous in the WWE as Irwin R. Schyster and his uncle, Barry Windham, becoming a well-known wrestler in the 1980s and early 1990s, Windham Rotunda came from a family of professional wrestlers. Taylor Rotunda, his brother, also competes for WWE as Bo Dallas.

Two-time former WWE Universal champion Bray Wyatt also held the title of WWE champion. He started out in the WWE developmental division as Husky Harris before changing into Bray Wyatt, a crazed swampland cult leader who attracted followers with his diabolical appeal. His catchphrase, “follow the buzzards,” and the eerie words, “he’s got the whole world in his hands,” became well-known. Fans would hold up cellphone flashlights during his entrances while his ominous music played in the dark.

Rotunda took on a sinister persona in 2019 called The Fiend, complete with a scary clown mask. Due to its near invincibility in the ring, this dual persona attracted both praise and criticism, giving his character complexity.

Rotunda made a comeback to the WWE in 2022 as a redesigned Bray Wyatt who was plagued by ghosts from the past like The Fiend and Uncle Howdy. However, because of health difficulties, his plot was chopped in half in February.

Additionally paying homage, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson said, “Always had tremendous regard and love for him and the Rotunda family. I adored his presence, his in-ring work, his promosand his connection to the WWE community. Character that is very uncommon, cool and difficult to produce in the wild world of professional wrestling.

With his demise, professional wrestling has lost one of its most creative and skilled figures, leaving a lasting legacy of memorable characters and narratives.
