Hanukkah, also referred to as Chanukah, holds a significant place in the Jewish calendar, commemorating the historical triumph of the Maccabees over the Seleucid Greeks in 139 BCE. This eight-day festival, commencing from the evening of Thursday to Friday, December 15th, marks the reclamation of Jerusalem’s Holy Temple and the miraculous event of the menorah’s oil lasting for eight days when it was expected to last only one.

The essence of Hanukkah resonates through its customs and traditions. The lighting of the menorah, a symbolic representation of hope and resilience, takes center stage. Each night, another candle is lit, illuminating the darkness and emphasizing the festival’s core religious significance. Though consumer gifts aren’t traditionally exchanged nightly, the focus remains on the spiritual aspects of the menorah lighting.

A prevalent tradition involves charitable giving, where each day witnesses an increase in donations as candles are kindled. Additionally, children are often gifted “gelt,” symbolic money, and dreidels—four-sided spinning tops inscribed with Hebrew letters. These letters collectively signify the phrase “a great miracle happened there,” harkening back to the miraculous oil.
